Overview

Radix Sanguisorbae, the dried root of *Sanguisorba officinalis* L., is a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known as Diyu. It is traditionally valued for its hemostatic (stopping bleeding), anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, and is commonly used to treat internal hemorrhages, hematochezia (bleeding hemorrhoids), diarrhea, enteritis, and burns. Modern pharmacological research has identified several bioactive constituents, including triterpenoid saponins (such as ziyuglycoside I and II), tannins (ellagic acid, gallic acid), and flavonoids (quercetin). These compounds contribute to its diverse therapeutic potential, including the promotion of hematopoiesis following chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression via FAK and Erk1/2 activation, protection of the intestinal barrier in sepsis by inhibiting ferroptosis through the HIF-1α/HO-1 axis, and induction of apoptosis in breast cancer cells via p53-mediated pathways. It is also utilized in veterinary medicine to treat conditions like necrotic enteritis in broilers and saprolegniosis in fish eggs.
