Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Radix Stemonae is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine derived from the dried root tubers of Stemona tuberosa, Stemona japonica, or Stemona sessilifolia. It has been used for thousands of years in China primarily as an antitussive (cough-suppressing) and insecticidal agent. Its main indications include acute and chronic cough, whooping cough, cough due to pulmonary tuberculosis, and parasitic infections. The herb is classified as warm and slightly sweet-bitter, entering the Lung channel, and is traditionally believed to "moisten the Lung" and stop cough. Modern pharmacological studies indicate that Radix Stemonae contains alkaloids such as stemoninine, neotuberostemonine, and tuberostemonine, which are thought to contribute to its therapeutic effects, including relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, antibacterial, antituberculous, antifungal, and anthelmintic activity. It is typically administered as a decoction and can be used raw or processed (e.g., roasted with honey)[1][4]. The standard clinical dosage is 5–10 grams per day[4].
