Overview

Ragaglitazar is a dual peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonist, specifically targeting both PPAR alpha and PPAR gamma subtypes. It was developed as an insulin sensitizer and lipid modulator for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. Ragaglitazar belongs to the "glitazar" class of drugs, which are designed to improve glucose homeostasis by enhancing insulin sensitivity (via PPAR gamma activation) and to lower triglycerides and other lipids (via PPAR alpha activation). The drug was investigated for its potential benefits in metabolic disorders but development was discontinued due to safety concerns, including carcinogenicity observed in preclinical studies.
