Overview

Ragweed pollen extract is a biological product derived from the pollen of *Ambrosia artemisiifolia*, commonly known as ragweed. It is primarily utilized in the study, diagnosis, and treatment of allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, and ocular allergy. The extract contains various allergenic proteins, including the major allergen Amb a 1, as well as Amb a 8, Amb a 9, Amb a 10, and profilin. It is known to elicit robust allergic responses by stimulating IgE production, inducing Th2-type airway inflammation, activating the NLRP3 inflammasome, and promoting the recruitment of inflammatory cells like eosinophils and neutrophils. Its effects are mediated, in part, through pathways involving Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and Myeloid differentiation protein 2 (MD2), and it can induce oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Pollen-derived adenosine has also been identified as a critical cofactor in its allergenicity. The extract is a key component in diagnostic methods such as skin prick tests and is administered in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) to modify the disease course of ragweed allergy.
