Overview

Raltegravir is an antiretroviral medication that belongs to the HIV integrase inhibitor class. It works by inhibiting HIV integrase, preventing the viral genome from being incorporated into the human genome, thus decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although raltegravir does not cure HIV, it may decrease the chance of developing AIDS and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Raltegravir was the first integrase inhibitor approved by the FDA on October 12, 2007. It is primarily metabolized by glucuronidation via UGT1A1 and is used in combination with other antiretroviral medications to treat HIV infection. It was developed and is manufactured by Merck & Co.
