Overview

Ramosetron hydrochloride is a potent and selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It is primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and is also used for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). The drug works by blocking 5-HT3 receptors on vagal nerve terminals in the gastrointestinal tract and in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the central nervous system. While traditionally administered orally or intravenously, new formulations such as the sustained-release transdermal patch developed by Hangzhou Hekang Pharmaceutical are being evaluated to provide prolonged therapeutic effects and improve patient compliance. The transdermal patch formulation is designed to maintain stable plasma concentrations over an extended period, potentially reducing the frequency of administration compared to oral disintegrating tablets.
