Overview

Ramulus mori alkaloids (SZ-A) are a group of polyhydroxy alkaloid compounds extracted from the branches of the mulberry tree (*Morus alba*), traditionally known as "Sangzhi" in Chinese medicine. The main active components include 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), fagomine (FA), and 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-D-arabinitol (DAB). These compounds act primarily as potent inhibitors of α-glucosidase enzymes in the intestine, thereby reducing postprandial blood glucose levels. SZ-A is approved by the China National Medical Products Administration for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Beyond its hypoglycemic effect, it has demonstrated benefits in improving lipid metabolism, alleviating obesity and metabolic syndrome through modulation of gut microbiota and bile acid metabolism, reducing inflammation, and protecting against diabetic complications such as nephropathy. The formulation also contains flavonoids and other bioactive constituents that may contribute to its multifaceted pharmacological profile[1][3][4][6].
