Overview

Ranibizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) that targets vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). It is used primarily to treat ocular diseases characterized by abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye. These include neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), diabetic retinopathy, macular edema following retinal vein occlusion, and myopic choroidal neovascularization. Ranibizumab binds with high affinity to all biologically active forms of VEGF-A, preventing them from interacting with their receptors on endothelial cells. This inhibition reduces vascular permeability and neovascularization in the retina, thereby slowing vision loss and improving visual outcomes. The drug was developed by Genentech/Roche.
