Overview

This is a sustained-release drug delivery system developed by Spinnaker Biosciences for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). The therapy utilizes nanoporous silicon oxide (pSi) particles, manufactured by TruTag Technologies, as a vehicle to encapsulate and slowly release ranibizumab, an anti-VEGF antibody fragment. Following intravitreal injection, the biocompatible and biodegradable particles provide controlled release of the payload over several months, aiming to reduce the injection burden and improve patient compliance compared to standard monthly or bimonthly ranibizumab injections. Ranibizumab works by binding to and neutralizing VEGF-A, thereby inhibiting the pathologic neovascularization and vascular leakage characteristic of wet AMD.
