Overview

**Ranitidine bismuth citrate** is an oral bismuth-containing salt complex of ranitidine and citrate formerly marketed for **Helicobacter pylori infection associated with duodenal ulcer disease**. In gastric fluid it releases ranitidine, which competitively and reversibly antagonizes histamine H2 receptors on gastric parietal cells to suppress basal and meal-stimulated acid secretion, together with bismuth species that suppress *Helicobacter pylori* and contribute to gastric mucosal protection. It was developed by Glaxo Wellcome and marketed as Pylorid and Tritec; the US Tritec product is discontinued.
