Rapeseed oil sterol esters are plant-derived lipid compounds obtained by the esterification of sterols found in rapeseed oil, including sitosterol, campesterol, and a characteristically high concentration of brassicasterol. These compounds are primarily used as functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals to manage cholesterol levels. Their mechanism of action involves competing with dietary and biliary cholesterol for incorporation into mixed micelles within the intestinal lumen, thereby inhibiting cholesterol absorption and reducing plasma LDL cholesterol levels. Clinical research has demonstrated that a daily intake of 2 grams of these esters can lower LDL cholesterol by approximately 8-9%, making them a significant tool in the dietary management of hypercholesterolemia and the prevention of atherosclerosis.
