Overview

Raplixa + gelatin sponge is a combination topical hemostatic therapy for surgical bleeding consisting of a **dry-powder fibrin sealant** (Raplixa, formerly known as Fibrocaps), which contains human plasma-derived **fibrinogen** and **thrombin**, applied together with an absorbable gelatin sponge. The active components rapidly interact at the bleeding site, forming a fibrin clot to achieve hemostasis when conventional surgical techniques (suture, ligature, cautery) are inadequate or impractical. Raplixa’s proteins are individually purified, virus-inactivated, and spray-dried, resulting in a room-temperature-stable powder that can be sprinkled or sprayed directly onto the wound. This combination has been shown in phase 3 clinical trials to significantly reduce time to hemostasis compared to gelatin sponge alone in mild to moderate bleeding during spinal, hepatic, vascular, and soft tissue surgeries[1][2][3][4][5].
