Rasagiline is a highly selective, potent, and irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), used for the symptomatic management of Parkinson's disease. It can be administered as monotherapy in early-stage Parkinson's disease or as adjunct therapy with levodopa in more advanced cases. By inhibiting MAO-B, rasagiline increases extracellular dopamine levels in the striatum, thereby alleviating motor symptoms associated with dopamine deficiency. In addition to its primary mechanism of action, rasagiline may also exert neuroprotective effects independent of MAO inhibition. The drug was originally developed by Teva.
