Overview
Ravintsara is an essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves of the *Cinnamomum camphora* tree, specifically the 1,8-cineole chemotype native to Madagascar. It is widely utilized in aromatherapy and natural medicine for its potent antiviral, antibacterial, and immunostimulant properties. The primary active constituent, 1,8-cineole (also known as eucalyptol), acts as a mucolytic and expectorant by stimulating bronchial glands and reducing mucus viscosity, making it effective for respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and sinusitis. Additionally, ravintsara is noted for its ability to support the immune system and its topical application for viral skin infections like herpes simplex. Unlike the camphor-rich varieties of *C. camphora* found in Asia, the Madagascan ravintsara is low in camphor, making it safer for therapeutic use.
