Overview

Raxtozinameran is a monovalent, nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech for the prevention of COVID-19. It is specifically adapted to target the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant. As part of the Comirnaty family of vaccines, raxtozinameran functions by delivering mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles into host cells, which then translate the genetic sequence into the viral spike protein to elicit an immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell activation. It was authorized and recommended for use during the 2023-2024 vaccination season to address the evolving landscape of SARS-CoV-2 variants.
