Overview

Razupenem is a broad-spectrum, injectable carbapenem antibiotic from the beta-lactam class, developed primarily to combat bacteria resistant to commonly used antibiotics. It exhibits strong activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), enterococci, Enterobacteriaceae, and various anaerobes. Razupenem acts as a cell wall synthesis inhibitor by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby disrupting bacterial cell wall formation. The drug was developed by Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (now Sumitomo Pharma) and Protez Pharmaceuticals as an alternative for treating skin and soft tissue infections caused by resistant pathogens. Despite promising antibacterial activity in preclinical studies and early clinical trials, further development was discontinued after Phase II due to a high rate of side effects[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
