Drug intelligence / Profile preview
RB-PDAT (rose bengal-assisted green light photodynamic antimicrobial therapy) is an investigational drug-device combination therapy being developed by VisiRose (a spinoff of Provectus Biopharmaceuticals and the University of Miami) for the treatment of severe, progressive infectious keratitis (corneal ulcers) and other ocular infections. The therapy consists of a topical formulation of pharmaceutical-grade rose bengal sodium (designated as PV-305) applied to the cornea, followed by activation with a custom green-light LED device. Upon green-light illumination, the rose bengal photosensitizer generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen and superoxide, which destroy bacterial, fungal, and parasitic pathogens (including multidrug-resistant strains and Acanthamoeba) via a multi-target biophysical mechanism. Additionally, the photodynamic action promotes corneal collagen cross-linking, which helps stiffen and stabilize the cornea to prevent perforation. RB-PDAT has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials (REAGIR and REAGIR II) as an adjunctive treatment to avoid therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty.
