rBCG-N-RSV is a recombinant live-attenuated vaccine candidate developed by Biothervax SpA in collaboration with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. It utilizes the Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) strain as a bacterial vector to express the nucleoprotein (N) of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This approach is designed to induce a robust, Th1-polarized cellular immune response against RSV, which is intended to provide protection without the risk of vaccine-enhanced respiratory disease (ERD) associated with Th2-biased responses. As it is based on the BCG vaccine, it also maintains the potential to protect against tuberculosis. The vaccine is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for the prevention of RSV infection in adults aged 60 and older, and has previously undergone testing in pediatric populations.
