Drug intelligence / Profile preview
rBCG-SIC is a genetically modified recombinant Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (rBCG) strain engineered to express the streptococcal inhibitor of complement (sic) gene. Developed by researchers in South Korea, including those at Chung-Ang University Hospital, Hanil General Hospital, and VHS Medical Center, this immunotherapeutic agent is designed to overcome BCG unresponsiveness in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). By expressing the sic gene, the recombinant bacterium exhibits enhanced resistance to host-derived antimicrobial peptides (such as cathelicidin and alpha-defensin-1) and demonstrates improved internalization into bladder cancer cells. This leads to increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as interleukin-6) and enhanced antitumor immune responses, resulting in reduced tumor volume in preclinical models.
