Overview
Ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) is a semi-solid, energy-dense nutritional formulation designed for the rehabilitation of children with severe acute malnutrition. Developed and tested by Makerere University in clinical trials (such as NCT00131417), this specific formulation consists of a mixture of full cream milk powder, icing sugar, groundnut paste, vegetable oil, and a mineral-vitamin complex. Unlike traditional liquid diets like F-100 or High Energy Milk (HEM), RUTF is water-free, which minimizes the risk of bacterial contamination and allows for home-based treatment without refrigeration. It provides approximately 545 kcal/100g, with a balanced distribution of protein and lipid calories to support rapid weight gain and recovery in malnourished pediatric populations.
