Overview

A combination therapy of rebamipide and benzydamine hydrochloride used primarily for the prevention and management of radiation-induced oral mucositis in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Both medications are formulated as gargles or mouthwashes for topical application. Rebamipide is an amino acid analog with gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties that promotes mucus secretion and inhibits inflammatory cytokines. Benzydamine HCl is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with local anesthetic, analgesic, and antimicrobial effects. Clinical trials have shown that both agents are almost equally effective in preventing and treating radiation-induced oral mucositis, though rebamipide may be superior in reducing the severity of mucositis.
