Overview

Reboxetine is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (NRI) primarily used as an antidepressant. It was initially developed by Farmitalia-Carlo Erba, with subsequent development and marketing by Pharmacia and then Pfizer. The drug is approved in many countries worldwide for the treatment of major depressive disorder, and has also been used off-label or studied for panic disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, it is not approved for use in the United States, with the FDA declining approval due to a lack of compelling evidence of efficacy. Reboxetine exerts its therapeutic effects by selectively blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine into presynaptic neurons, thereby increasing the concentration of norepinephrine in the synaptic cleft and enhancing noradrenergic neurotransmission.
