REC-02 is an investigational cell therapy consisting of ultra-purified allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). It is being developed for the treatment of lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) and associated lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration. The therapy involves the implantation of these purified MSCs, typically embedded within an in situ-forming alginate gel (referred to as dMD-001), directly into the intervertebral disc space during surgical procedures such as laminoplasty or discectomy. The mechanism of action relies on the regenerative capacity of the MSCs to restore the structural integrity of the disc and provide anti-inflammatory effects, thereby alleviating the symptoms of spinal stenosis. The development program is a collaboration involving Mochida Pharmaceutical and is supported by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).
