Recilisib (Ex-RAD) is a small molecule radioprotectant and an activator of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling pathway. Developed by Onconova Therapeutics, it is designed to mitigate the lethal effects of ionizing radiation by promoting cell survival and DNA repair mechanisms. Unlike traditional radioprotectors that act as antioxidants or free radical scavengers, recilisib modulates intracellular signaling pathways to enhance the natural cellular response to radiation-induced damage. It has been investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and is widely used in preclinical research as a pharmacological tool to activate the PI3K/AKT/mTOR axis in various disease models, including cancer, inflammatory disorders, and metabolic conditions.
