Overview

Recipient regulatory T cells (Tregs) are an autologous cell therapy developed by Stanford University for the treatment of brittle type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapy involves the collection of a patient's own T cells via apheresis, followed by the isolation and purification of the regulatory T cell subset. These cells are then reinfused into the patient following a clinical islet transplantation. Tregs are a specialized population of T cells that play a critical role in maintaining immune homeostasis and self-tolerance by suppressing overactive or autoimmune responses. In the context of type 1 diabetes, the infusion of these cells is intended to induce immune tolerance and prevent the autoimmune destruction or rejection of the newly transplanted insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, thereby improving glycemic control and reducing the patient's dependence on exogenous insulin.
