Overview
Recofol N is an intravenous anesthetic and sedative containing propofol formulated in a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) and long-chain triglyceride (LCT) emulsion. Originally developed by Bayer and acquired by Primex Pharmaceuticals in 2011, it is used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia as well as for sedation in ventilated patients within intensive care units (ICU). The drug acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. It is considered a branded generic of the originator propofol and is marketed globally. The MCT/LCT formulation is designed to improve the lipid metabolism profile and potentially reduce pain on injection compared to traditional long-chain triglyceride formulations.
