The **recombinant acellular pertussis vaccine** is an immunization designed to prevent pertussis (whooping cough), composed of antigens produced via recombinant DNA technology rather than purified directly from Bordetella pertussis. The main antigens are genetically detoxified pertussis toxin (PT), filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), and pertactin (PRN), often expressed and purified from recombinant hosts such as E. coli. This vaccine induces humoral and cellular immunity, including robust CD4+ T cell responses in lung tissue and strong antibody responses for FHA and PRN. Recombinant vaccines may yield higher or more sustained immunogenicity compared to traditional chemically inactivated acellular pertussis vaccines. They are intended for booster use in adolescents/adults, and may be formulated alone or in combination with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids[1][3]. Developers in Korea include Yonsei University and Vaccine Innovative Technology ALliance; GC Pharma incorporates recombinant antigens in trivalent DTaP platforms. The mechanism of action is to induce neutralizing antibodies and cellular immunity against pertussis toxin to prevent infection.
