Recombinant angiopoietin-like 4 (rhANGPTL4) is a recombinant version of the endogenous ANGPTL4 protein, a member of the angiopoietin-like family. It acts as a potent modulator of lipid metabolism by functioning as a non-competitive inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), thereby regulating the hydrolysis of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. Beyond its metabolic role, rhANGPTL4 has demonstrated protective effects on vascular and mucosal barriers, specifically protecting the blood-brain barrier and the intestinal lining. In preclinical models, it has shown therapeutic potential in treating intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury, reducing proteinuria in glomerular diseases, and mitigating inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis by downregulating CD8+ T cell and macrophage activity.
