Overview

Recombinant bacterial ACE2 receptors-like enzyme (B38-CAP) is a protein-based biologic derived from Paenibacillus species that functions as an angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-like carboxypeptidase. It shares structural similarity with mammalian ACE2 and acts by degrading angiotensin II to angiotensin 1-7, thereby reducing the deleterious effects of excess angiotensin II such as vasoconstriction, inflammation, and tissue injury. This mechanism counteracts the renin-angiotensin system's harmful activation seen in conditions like hypertension and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), including those associated with COVID-19. B38-CAP is being investigated for its potential to treat hypertension, myocardial fibrosis, cardiac dysfunction, lung injury, and ARDS[1][2].
