Drug intelligence / Profile preview
recombinant Bacteroides ovatus expressing anti-BFT1 peptide is an engineered probiotic strain of *Bacteroides ovatus* designed to prevent and treat enteric diseases caused by enterotoxigenic *Bacteroides fragilis* (ETBF). The probiotic is genetically modified to constitutively express and secrete in silico-designed short peptides that bind and neutralize *B. fragilis* toxin 1 (BFT1, or fragilysin). By blocking BFT1, the therapeutic prevents toxin-induced damage to the intestinal epithelium, including E-cadherin cleavage, F-actin rearrangement, and inflammatory cytokine responses. It is being developed by the University of Washington for the potential treatment of acute diarrheal illness and associated poor growth outcomes in children.
