Overview

recombinant Bet v1 is a laboratory-produced form of Bet v 1, the major allergen from birch pollen (*Betula verrucosa*). Bet v 1 is the prototypic member of the pathogenesis-related class 10 (PR-10) protein family and has a molecular mass of approximately 17 kDa. Up to 95% of patients allergic to birch pollen demonstrate IgE reactivity to Bet v 1. Recombinant Bet v 1 is designed to mimic the natural protein and is produced in various expression systems, such as *E. coli*, *Brevibacillus brevis*, and *Nicotiana benthamiana*, maintaining immunogenic and allergenic properties, as shown by IgE binding in serum from allergic patients[2][3][4]. Its mechanism of action in immunotherapy is believed to mediate immune tolerance by presenting the major allergen in a controlled and defined way; it can induce both IgG and IgE antibodies and stimulate Bet v 1–specific T cells[1]. Pharmaceutical-grade recombinant Bet v 1 is being investigated and has been used in clinical trials for allergen immunotherapy (AIT) in birch pollen allergic patients, showing clinical efficacy and a reduction in allergic symptoms[2][3][4].
