recombinant butyrylcholinesterase

Recombinant butyrylcholinesterase (rBuChE) is a plant-produced enzyme being developed by AntoXa (a subsidiary of PlantForm Corporation) in collaboration with Defence Research & Development Canada (DRDC). It functions as a bioscavenger designed to protect against exposure to organophosphate nerve agents, such as sarin and soman. By binding to and neutralizing these toxic agents in the bloodstream before they can reach and inhibit endogenous acetylcholinesterase at the neuromuscular junction and in the central nervous system, rBuChE acts as a prophylactic or post-exposure treatment. The product is manufactured using a proprietary plant-based expression system (VivoExpress), which allows for rapid, scalable production of complex proteins.
