Recombinant C-C motif chemokine ligand 22 (CCL22), also known as macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC), is a recombinant version of the endogenous human protein that acts as a potent chemoattractant for cells expressing the C-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CCR4), such as Th2 cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs). In research contexts, particularly concerning rheumatoid arthritis (RA), recombinant CCL22 is utilized to study the modulation of Treg populations and the STAT5 signaling pathway. Experimental evidence indicates that CCL22 levels are elevated in RA patients and that its interaction with CCR4 can lead to a decrease in Treg numbers and function, potentially exacerbating autoimmune reactions. While it serves as a critical tool for understanding immune cell trafficking and the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases, it is primarily categorized as a research reagent rather than a therapeutic agent in clinical development.
