Overview

Recombinant CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) is a purified, laboratory-produced form of the human glycoprotein CEA. Normally produced in fetal gastrointestinal tissue and present at very low levels in healthy adults, CEA is overexpressed in several adenocarcinomas including colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, breast, and lung cancers. Recombinant forms are used primarily as controls or antigens in diagnostic assays and research applications. In clinical settings and research trials, native or engineered forms of CEA may be targeted by immunotherapies or vaccines to stimulate anti-tumor immune responses. The protein functions as a cell adhesion molecule and is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily[1][2][3].
