Recombinant endoglin is a biotechnologically engineered form of the endoglin protein (CD105), a transmembrane glycoprotein that serves as a co-receptor for the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway. It is primarily expressed on vascular endothelial cells and is essential for angiogenesis, vascular remodeling, and maintaining the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB). In therapeutic research, recombinant endoglin is being investigated for its ability to alleviate neuropathic pain by protecting the BSCB and modulating TGF-β/Smad2 signaling. It is also studied in the context of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), where mutations in the endoglin gene lead to vascular malformations, and as a component of fusion proteins for targeted cancer immunotherapy. Conversely, in pre-eclampsia research, soluble or recombinant forms are often used to study the sequestration of TGF-β1 and TGF-β3, which contributes to endothelial dysfunction.
