The recombinant enterovirus type 71 vaccine is a prophylactic biologic developed by Chongqing Bowei Baitai Biopharmaceutical for the prevention of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection. Unlike traditional inactivated EV71 vaccines, this candidate utilizes a recombinant protein platform, specifically expressing virus-like particles (VLPs) or capsid proteins in the yeast *Hansenula polymorpha*. This expression system is designed to produce highly immunogenic antigens that mimic the structure of the native virus without containing live or inactivated viral genetic material. The vaccine is formulated with an aluminum-based adjuvant to enhance the induction of neutralizing antibodies. It aims to provide a scalable and safe alternative to whole-virus vaccines, targeting the primary genotypes responsible for HFMD outbreaks in the Asia-Pacific region.
