Overview

Recombinant equine luteinizing hormone (reLH) is a biologic agent engineered as a single-chain recombinant protein consisting of genetically linked alpha and beta subunits. Typically expressed in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, reLH is designed to mimic the physiological activity of endogenous equine luteinizing hormone. It acts as a potent agonist of the luteinizing hormone receptor, triggering the biochemical cascades necessary for follicular maturation and ovulation. In equine reproductive medicine, it is primarily utilized to induce and synchronize ovulation in cycling mares and to enhance fertility through superovulation protocols, often in conjunction with recombinant equine follicle-stimulating hormone (reFSH). Developed and extensively studied at institutions like the University of California, Davis, reLH offers a standardized, pathogen-free alternative to traditional pituitary-derived gonadotropins or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), providing more consistent clinical outcomes in veterinary practice.
