Overview

Recombinant feline interferon omega (rFeIFN-omega) is a type I interferon produced by recombinant DNA technology using the gene for feline interferon omega. It acts as an immunostimulant and antiviral agent by inducing an antiviral state in cells and stimulating multiple immune pathways, including the production of antiviral proteins and enzymes[1][6]. Its mechanism involves modulation of innate immunity rather than direct suppression of viral replication[2][3]. The drug is primarily indicated for the treatment of canine parvovirus in dogs and for cats infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), especially in non-terminal cases[1][4][5]. It has also been used off-label to treat other viral infections in cats and dogs. Recombinant feline interferon omega was first developed in Japan in the early 1990s, with its gene cloned in 1992 and initial production achieved using silkworm larvae as a baculovirus vector system[5].
