Overview

Recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH) is a synthetic form of the endogenous human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), produced using recombinant DNA technology. It is a key therapeutic agent in assisted reproductive technology (ART) used to stimulate the development of multiple follicles in the ovaries of women undergoing treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In the context of clinical research at Assiut University, rFSH is utilized in conventional high-dose gonadotropin protocols (typically 300-450 IU/day) to manage patients classified as 'poor responders' according to the Bologna criteria. The hormone works by binding to the follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) on granulosa cells, promoting follicular growth, maturation, and estrogen production.
