Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Recombinant haemoglobin is an engineered, acellular haemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) developed as a blood substitute and oxygen therapeutic. Produced in *Escherichia coli*, it is designed with specific mutations (such as tyrosine insertions to facilitate electron transfer and N-terminal deletions) to reduce nitric oxide (NO) scavenging and minimize the oxidative toxicity typically associated with cell-free haemoglobin. To prevent rapid renal clearance and increase vascular retention, the protein is site-specifically PEGylated. It is being investigated for the treatment of global ischaemia-reperfusion injury, trauma, and hemorrhage.
