Overview

Hevrevac is a recombinant, monovalent virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine developed for active immunization against infection caused by the Hepatitis E virus (HEV). The vaccine contains the HEV-239 antigen, which is a purified, truncated fragment of the HEV genotype 1 ORF2 capsid protein (amino acids 368–606) expressed in *Escherichia coli*. Upon administration, the antigen self-assembles into 23 nm icosahedral virus-like particles that mimic the natural viral structure, stimulating the host immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies. Formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant, Hevrevac is administered intramuscularly as a three-dose regimen (at 0, 1, and 6 months) and has demonstrated high efficacy and long-term immunogenicity. Originally developed by Xiamen University and Xiamen Innovax Biotech (marketed as Hecolin in China), the vaccine was licensed and launched in India by URIHK Pharmaceuticals in August 2025 for adults aged 18 to 65 years.
