Overview

Recombinant HMGB2 protein is a laboratory-produced version of the High Mobility Group Box 2 (HMGB2) protein, a member of the high mobility group box family of non-histone chromosomal proteins. While intracellular HMGB2 plays a protective role in maintaining homeostasis by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome and repressing IL-1 transcription, extracellular HMGB2 acts as a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) that promotes inflammatory responses. Research indicates that extracellular HMGB2 levels increase in progressive atherosclerotic plaques following macrophage apoptosis. Recombinant HMGB2 protein has been shown to promote inflammation in vitro through the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE) and exacerbate atherosclerosis in mouse models when administered intraperitoneally. This protein is primarily used as a research tool to investigate the role of HMGB2 in cardiovascular disease and inflammatory signaling pathways.
