Recombinant human albumin (rHA or rHSA) is a genetically engineered form of the naturally occurring plasma protein human serum albumin. It is produced by expressing the relevant genes in genetically modified hosts such as yeast (e.g., Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Hansenula polymorpha), resulting in an animal- and blood-free product with high purity and batch-to-batch consistency[4][6][8]. Recombinant human albumin functions primarily to maintain colloid oncotic pressure and increase circulating plasma volume. Clinically, it serves as a replacement for plasma-derived HSA in conditions like hypovolemia and hypoalbuminemia[1][2], and is being explored for use in critical illnesses such as cirrhosis and sepsis[5]. Beyond direct therapeutic use, it acts as a stabilizer in vaccines (e.g., M-M-R II®, ProQuad®), biologics formulations, drug delivery systems, cell culture media, and medical device coatings due to its biocompatibility and ability to prevent aggregation or oxidation of proteins[4][5][8].
