Recombinant human Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (rhAAT) is a bioengineered glycoprotein serine protease inhibitor being developed through a collaboration between Kamada and Yissum, the technology transfer company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This recombinant protein is designed to inhibit neutrophil elastase, thereby preventing excessive tissue proteolysis in patients with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD). The project utilizes a robust eukaryotic expression system to maximize protein yield and functionality, aiming to provide a recombinant alternative to plasma-derived AAT products like Glassia to address supply limitations and explore additional therapeutic indications beyond AATD.
