Recombinant human alpha-1 antitrypsin (plant-derived) is a recombinant protein produced in rice seeds using Heyuan Biotechnology's proprietary OryzHiExp platform. It is designed as a replacement therapy for individuals with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), a genetic condition characterized by low levels of the protective protein alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1AT). The drug functions as a serine protease inhibitor, specifically targeting and neutralizing neutrophil elastase to prevent the proteolytic degradation of lung tissue, which otherwise leads to emphysema. As a plant-derived product, it aims to provide a scalable, cost-effective, and pathogen-free alternative to traditional plasma-derived A1AT therapies.
