Overview

Recombinant human beta-defensin 2 (rHuβD2) is a topical biologic therapeutic developed by Planton GmbH for the treatment of skin infections in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). As a recombinant form of the endogenous human host-defense peptide HBD2 (encoded by the DEFB4A gene), it aims to compensate for the defective induction of HBD2 typically seen in AD skin lesions. The peptide exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus-secreted extracellular proteases, such as V8 (SspA), thereby protecting the skin barrier from degradation. Additionally, it possesses broad antimicrobial properties against bacteria, fungi, and viruses through membrane permeabilisation. It is currently being evaluated in Phase I clinical trials as a topical cream.
