Overview
Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) gel is an experimental topical biologic formulation evaluated by the University of Baghdad for dental applications. rhBMP-2 is a potent osteoinductive growth factor that belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. It functions by binding to specific BMP receptors on the surface of mesenchymal stem cells, triggering a signaling cascade that promotes their differentiation into bone-forming osteoblasts. In the context of partial edentulism, the gel is applied locally to the osteotomy site during dental implant surgery to accelerate osseointegration, improve primary and secondary implant stability, and enhance peri-implant bone density.
