Recombinant human collagen gel is a topical therapeutic formulation containing collagen protein produced through recombinant DNA technology, typically using yeast (*Pichia pastoris*) or plant-based expression systems. Designed for wound management, particularly in partial-thickness burns, the gel serves as a bioactive scaffold that mimics the natural extracellular matrix. It facilitates wound healing by promoting the adhesion, migration, and proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes through interactions with cell-surface receptors such as integrins and discoidin domain receptors. By using a recombinant human sequence, the product avoids the potential immunogenicity, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) risks, and batch-to-batch variability associated with traditional animal-derived collagen products. In clinical trials, it has been evaluated in comparison to biological dressings like xenografts (e.g., gene-transfected pigskin) to evaluate its efficacy in accelerating re-epithelialization and improving cosmetic outcomes.
