Recombinant human fibroblast growth factor 9 (rhFGF9) proteoliposomes is an experimental biologic therapeutic formulation being investigated for the treatment of epilepsy. The drug consists of the recombinant human FGF9 protein encapsulated in proteoliposomes, a specialized lipid-based delivery system designed for intranasal administration. This route is intended to bypass the blood-brain barrier and deliver the therapeutic protein directly to the central nervous system. FGF9 plays a critical role in the survival of GABAergic neurons and the regulation of GABA expression. Research indicates that a deficiency in FGF9 leads to a GABA/glutamate imbalance, which is a key driver of seizure activity. Preclinical studies conducted by Wenzhou Medical University have demonstrated that rhFGF9 proteoliposomes can significantly reduce seizure frequency in mouse models by activating fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR) and restoring inhibitory neurotransmission.
