Overview

Recombinant human follicle stimulating hormone (rhFSH) is a recombinant form of the naturally occurring follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), a gonadotropin essential for reproductive function. It is produced using recombinant DNA technology, typically in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, ensuring a high degree of purity and consistency compared to urinary-derived gonadotropins. rhFSH acts by binding to the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR), a G protein-coupled receptor located on the granulosa cells of the ovaries and Sertoli cells of the testes. In the research conducted at the University of California, San Diego, rhFSH is utilized as a diagnostic tool to study the pathophysiology of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Specifically, it is administered intravenously to stimulate the ovaries and evaluate the resulting androgenic response, helping researchers understand the mechanisms behind increased male hormone production in women with PCOS.
